06. Friday, December 23rd

You know what they say about the weather in Vermont... if you don't like it, wait five minutes. In the course of the night and into the morning, we saw a few inches of snow, rain, some sleet, and a little bit of thunder and lightning. The weather may deserve a stocking full of coal today, but we all know that Okemo's grooming and snowmaking teams will revive the terrain and get us back to that high-quality skiing we know and love.

It was a wet one this morning. It was actually pouring, no question, but we headed out there anyways. We started climbing at 6:05 and made it to the Sugar House before we started getting wet. We love our GORE-TEX but it can only do so much when you are sweating on the inside and getting rained on from the outside. We made it halfway up Upper Sapphire before the sky lit up with lightning and we decided to head down. The snow was soft and playful, though. There is no doubt you are going to get wet out there but that doesn’t mean it won’t be fun. Some of the best skiing is when the snow is soft and mushy so if you are bold enough, go give it a shot, we did and don't regret it.

Okemo has 79 trails and 9 lifts scheduled this morning but currently, the upper mountain lifts are on wind hold, which means the trail and lift count will likely fluctuate throughout the day. We can’t attest to the wind conditions on the summit but based on the forecast and what we saw on the way up we imagine it’s pretty breezy. No snowmaking happened last night due to the weather but the groomers were out in force, and they gave us some great skiing.

Staying Dry Tip: If you're skiing today, bring an 'extra' of just about everything: gloves, hat, underwear, you name it. If you can get your hands on a poncho from the base lodges, do it.

Weather conditions will be changing today which will bring more precipitation (rain) and strong winds. This afternoon temps will drop rapidly. Temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits into the night which means things are going to freeze fast, so if you are on your way to Okemo for Christmas, be safe! The forecast is less than ideal for a ski town but we know Okemo is up for the challenge. This type of adversity always highlights how fast the Okemo Mountain Operations team can recover and make the best of whatever they are given.
