41. Friday, February 3rd

Updated: Feb 5, 2023

Before we expand on the elephant in the room (we're looking at you, arctic air) let's talk about how strange it is that at some point in the 1800s, we decided to take weather predictions from a groundhog. 🐀 Whether this was just for good fun at the German Candlemas celebration or not, many modern Americans now put their trust in Pennsylvania's ever-popular rodent despite his lack of a meteorology degree. I just want to reiterate that this groundhog is in fact only 40% accurate if you can even count this as a real statistic considering this mammal might think he's just out for a walk and some treats while up on that stage. With all that being said, I can't be too mad at the fact that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday and has granted us six more weeks of winter. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk...now let's get into today's snow report.

Okemo Mountain Snow Report
A very crispy and awe-inspiring Evergreen Express Quad this morning

It was a chilly start this morning, my Subaru read 7 degrees on my 90-second commute, but I’m not sure I can trust that reading because the Snow Stake had a temp reading of 0 degrees. It was calm in the base area as the pale blue sky lightened and the sun began to rise. Today’s sunrise couldn’t be beat. It was a sunglasses kind of morning and we even got a dusting of fresh snow last night. The one good thing about hiking in weather like this is that it is very easy to stay warm while you're moving. The summit was a bit blustery with even colder temps. I didn’t have an accurate reading but -7 degrees isn’t that far off. The snow on the way down was magical. Crisp, fast, and the kind of snow that squeaks when you walk on it. If you can brave the temperatures, you will not be disappointed.

They made snow on Exhibition, Boomerang, Punchline, Sachem, Lower Sel's (the halfpipe), and Blackout. It looks like they were shutting down snowmaking operations on my way down. With temps this cold, snowmaking can get risky with freezing pipes, so we support this decision. As I mentioned before, the grooming is phenomenal and the crew will be nice and cozy in their cabs tonight so they won’t need to shut down grooming operations with these temperatures.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye on the @OkemoConditions Twitter for updates if you're planning to ski today. High winds may have an impact on chairlift operations.
