44. Thursday, January 11th

Phew! We made it through the rain (for now) but you'd be pretty impressed with how the conditions turned out. 😄 We have a very special snow report for you today because everyone's favorite neighborhood Realtor, Joe Karl is taking over! 👏 Joe is one of the leaders of the Okemo uphill community and can often be found on the mountain before he begins his work day at William Raveis Vermont Properties, one of our Gold Sponsors! Joe plans to takeover the report every Thursday through the season, and then followed up by his daughter, Riley Karl, on Fridays. Let's hear what he had to say!

Like most days, Joe began his morning with a brisk hike up to the summit of Okemo. For a dad of three girls (two in college, one graduated), he continues to impress me with his stamina, willingness, and attitude toward getting in his daily exercise. It's a non-negotiable for Joe. 💪

Today's Quick Facts:

🏔️ Trail Count: 64/122

🚡 Lift Count: 12/20

Today's conditions are machine groomed with limited (if not any) non-groomed terrain. From the current Okemo terrain status, it seems like everything has been groomed, which isn't surprising because the rain created heavy snow that would be tough to ski through. With a storm total of 14 inches, the bit of rain we got did not ruin your ski trip plans by any means. 🙌

If anything, the rain might have helped us have a longer season. 😮 When the 14 inches of snow fell, it was extremely light and fluffy. If you tried to ski a closed trail, you would have hit a rock or two because the snow didn't offer great coverage or add to the base depth. However, mix that snow with a little (ok a lot) of rain, and you've created a good (if not ideal) base. 🪄

Pro Tip: Upper Chief, Lower Chief, and Wardance are closed for racing today.

According to Joe, the terrain is insanely carvable today, so get your racing pants on. He reports that the snow is more firm at the top and softer toward the bottom as the temperature rises. In true Joe fashion, he reports that "the bottom is like a Hershey bar you left on your dashboard on a summer day." 🍫 Joe gets bonus points because he even hiked up last night to feel the difference between yesterday and today's conditions. While it wasn't snowing in the village, there were flurries up top! ❄️

Overall, don't fret about the rain too much (though we hate that for Mother Nature). The Okemo Mountain Ops teams are pros at putting the mountain back together after unfavorable weather. As I write this and peek out my backyard, the woods have about a foot of snow, and that's down here in the village. The rain didn't wash away all of the snow, don't worry! The damage from the rain is honestly not noticeable (well, until you look at my gravel driveway) so Joe thinks you'll be pleasantly surprised with the conditions post-raistorm. Enjoy! 🎿
