48. Monday, January 15th

Good morning and Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it's Abby with your morning intro. 🙌 While most of us are blissfully enjoying the three-day weekend, I'm popping in with a reminder about what today means and how we can apply it to our skiing lifestyle.

As we all know, MLK Day is celebrated and remembered for his contributions to advancing civil rights, specifically his advocacy in helping secure equal rights for Black Americans. But did you know that it is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service? It's encouraged for us to volunteer and improve your own community today, something that I think is overlooked. 👀

Whether it's helping a neighbor shovel out their car, choosing to ride up with a Snow Star on the chairlift, letting the group in line go ahead of you, inviting a friend who has never skied before to learn, or saying more "thank yous" to the lifties, these are all small ways in which you can improve our skiing and boarding community. What will you do today to honor MLK's legacy? 🤗

While we are very unserious here at Unofficial, I think it's important to use our growing platform and influence in a positive way and to promote kindness, community support, and love. With that, I'll let Noah take it away for today's snow report. ⬇️ Enjoy! - Abby

Hannah basking in the morning sunrise.

It was the Hannah and Noah duo show for the coldest hike of the season. 🥶 After a planned 5:15 a.m. meeting time, we both pulled in at 5:30 a.m. It's great to have someone who is just as late as you are on your team. 😉 The compressors were on which meant snowmaking was in full operation on this 14-degree morning.

As we hiked up under the stars, we saw snowmaking happening in The Zone, which hopefully means the Halfpipe is coming soon. 🙏 There was also snowmaking on Switchback, Abby's favorite trail. There were plenty of more snow guns in action around the mountain, and we heard Sidewinder had snowmaking on it last night, too (a trail we know our subscribers and Solitude owners love).

Hannah and I had a great conversation about moral philosophy (it's more interesting than it sounds) which is very fitting for today's holiday. We chatted about the concepts of free will, principles and morals, and the classic trolley car problem. A pretty deep conversation for 6 a.m. 😜

At the summit, I ate some of my dad's banana bread and geared up for our downhill by throwing on some warm layers and tearing off the skins. The Sunburst Six was running; a great sign to start the ski day for ya! 🤩

Today's Quick Facts:

🏔️ Trail Count: 108/122

🚡 Lift Count: 20/20

⛷️ Today's Ski: Nordica Enforcer 94 Unlimited

🎿 Today's Boot: Nordica Unlimited LT 103 DYN

The snow conditions today are top-notch corduroy. 💯 It was crisp, edgeable, and fantastic mid-winter skiing. But, when you are skiing down at sunrise, it's hard to complain about much anyway. It's hard to imagine it rained most of the day on Saturday with conditions like this.

This coming week is going to be cold, so dress appropriately, but the skiing is not to be missed! Cold temps mean snowmaking will continue to rip and we should see that climbing trail count continue to rise. Speaking of which, when did we go from 60-ish trails to 108?! And how have we not talked about SouthFace's opening yet?! Way to go snowmakers! 👏
