52. Sunday, January 21st

Okemo really went from the most perfect conditions with buttery groomers to a straight-up glacier in a matter of two days. 😂 Hey everyone, it's Abby with your afternoon update. Noah had to take the day off from his early morning uphill adventure because he has a "man cold" (ladies, you know what I mean). 🤧 I took one for the team and bravely went to what is now seemingly Elsa's Ice Palace from Frozen. 🧊

It was a classic Ice Coast Ski Day, so I hope those of you who got out early were able to enjoy some decent turns at least. 🤘 All I know is that it was a tough day for Okemo with the Sunburst and Evergreen on wind hold all day long and wind-swept trails, causing probably one of the iciest days at Okemo I've ever seen. Let's talk about it. ✍️

'Twas another frigid day for Okemo with a wind chill of -14 degrees. 🥶 The afternoon warmed up into the teens as the sun blazed on this gorgeous bluebird day, but it did not help the conditions whatsoever. I didn't get out snow until 1 p.m. so I know I'm at fault here, but I did snag a free VIP front-row parking spot at Jackson Gore and that's really all that matters. 😎

I rode up with Josh, a tele-skier that I could tell would absolutely crush Noah if they did a tele-battle. We both were watching skiers and riders slide down the icy headwall of Quantum Leap underneath us and thought to ourselves "yeah, no". 😝 Vortex was particularly icy and I let out an audible "oh no" when I saw how bare it was. Needless to say, I took Sunset Strip, which was probably the best coverage I touched today, and the view of the summit is always spectacular. ✨ My hands were too cold to take a pic, so enjoy the screenshot of myself on today's Instagram Story.

Today's Quick Facts:

🏔️ Trail Count: 114/122

🚡 Lift Count: 20/20

⛷️Today's Ski: Nordica Santa Ana

🎿 Today's Boot: Nordica Dobermann 5

🧤 Today's Gear: Helly Hansen Powderqueen Set + Heated Socks 🔥

Crossing over Malfunction Junction, I found myself on what I know as Mountain Road but was uncertain because it felt like the Ice House rink. For once, I had too much speed on Mountain Road and was struggling to slow down on the honestly treacherous terrain. I'm sorry to all of the beginner skiers who found themselves on this section of Mountain Road today. Bless your heart. 💗

Sidewinder's headwall was a sight to behold. I'm not exaggerating when I say there were about 15-20 people all side slipping down the icy headwall holding onto their edges for dear life. Luckily, my skis are freshly sharpened from The Boot Pro, so I didn't have an issue. 🔪 It was at that moment that I knew I would not be staying out much longer. But you know what could make the conditions better? Candy. 🍭

Pro Tip: The conditions will get softer with warm temps on the horizon!

I cut over to Daybreak to visit The Candy Mailbox for a little pick-me-up. 🍫 As I solved all of my sorrows with a Reeses, my friend Brigid showed up with her Snow Stars! I skied down to the Morning Star Triple with them to help bring up some kiddos on the lift. Daybreak was one of the better trails thanks to low traffic and it doesn't get hit by too much wind. 💨 The kids didn't seem too bothered by the ice, so maybe today's motto is to have the mindset of a four-year-old and your ski day will be just rainbows and sunshine. 🌈

Jack-a-lope brought me back down to Jackson Gore and it was fantastic. The catwalk section was fast because of the firm conditions, so I barely had to push, which gave this trail bonus points. 🏆 There was more snow coverage and the switchback turns were not skied off to my surprise. Back at the Jeep, I was feeling proud to be an Ice Coaster and grateful to ski on even the worst of days. Cheers to that. 🍹

Shoutout to Bob, who I met on the chairlift today, and who also happens to be my neighbor! I bet he feels pretty cool to be neighbors with someone as famous as myself. 💁‍♀️

Lastly, a hello to Jeff and Justine, Winterplace owners who met my husband Danny today and realized he's married to the "Unofficial Abby". They told him that they read the reports every single day, and for that I am grateful. ✌️

Please follow the Uphill Travel Policy at Okemo, follow the rules, and be cool about it.

Think snow,
