Hope you had a nice Tuesday readers! Jessie here with your evening snow report. I was out on the mountain volunteering with the Cavendish Elementary Snow Sports program all afternoon, and those kids have me tuckered out! I was assigned to ski with the beginners at the Magic Carpet today 🪄 so this report will be a little abbreviated since I didn't get much time on other runs. 😊
I had a blast hanging out with the kiddos on the magic carpet today - it's fun to work with beginners because they can make so much progress in a single day! My group is just about ready to hit the chairlift for the first time - I can't wait to join them for that exciting rite of passage next week! 🎉 The snow was in great shape and temperatures were pretty mild at the base this afternoon. We're still enjoying the snow that fell yesterday, and the whole mountain was coated in white.
We had a fun afternoon bopping around the bunny hill as I tried (and failed!) to get the kids to follow the leader. 😆 Once they get the hang of skiing, all the little ones want to do is zoom ahead of me! Today was actually my first time ever riding the magic carpet at Okemo, back when I was a baby beginner Killington was still my home mountain.
Today's Quick Facts:
🏔️ Trail Count: 104/122
🚡 Lift Count: 11/20
⛷️Today's Ski: Nordica Santa Ana
After dropping the kids at the locker room around 3:30, I had just enough time to race up the mountain for one real run from the top.🏃🏻♀️ The snow from the last storm was still clinging to the trees, and there was a beautiful glaze of white everywhere you looked. I had the bubble lift to myself since it was the end of the day, and the serenity on the way up was a nice juxtaposition to my fun and chaotic afternoon with the kiddos. ☮️
Pro Tip: When deciding what to wear for the day, think about your activity level as well as the temperature. I didn't ski as hard as I normally do today, and it left me a little chilly. 🥶
I paused at the top trying to pick a trail - this was going to be my only big kid run of the day and I didn't want to waste it! I decided to go with Nor'Easter and wasn't disappointed. 😁Usually I start on Jolly Green Giant and then scootch over, but today I decided to take Nor'Easter from the top. It was worth the re-route since the top of Nor'Easter was ungroomed and a totally different experience than the rest of the trail - definitely a good thing when I was only getting one real run in today! The first part of Nor'Easter still had lots of nice fluffy snow from yesterday, but it was on top of some ice that was starting to poke through as the powder gets skied off. 🧊 The groomed part of the trail was a blast, and most importantly, I had it all to myself!
That's it for me on this last Tuesday in January. I'll be volunteering with the Snow Sports program for the next two weeks - so expect your Tuesday snow reports to come very late in the day and focus on beginner terrain. 😋
