73. Tuesday, March 14th

Happy Snow Day! It's Noah here with your afternoon update. At 5:32 a.m. I awoke to the phone ringing. To no surprise, it was for Rachel with notice that school was closed for a snow day (she's a teacher, not a child).🎨 I took a peek out the window and saw close to a foot of snow waiting for me. If you are in Vermont right now, then you know we are getting hammered with heavy wet snow. ❄️ It's the kind of snow that breaks tree branches and takes down power lines, and changes your 10-minute commute into a 30-minute commute. None of that stopped Rachel and me from heading out into the storm to see how the mountain looked!

Okemo Mountain Snow Report
Come and get it!

The mountain saw 11" of fresh snow before the snow stake flipped over at 6 a.m. As of 12:45 p.m. the stake is reading another 8", so we are looking at 19" so far this storm.📏 The mountain did have some trouble getting the ski day started. The upper mountain lifts began the day on wind hold. By the time we got to the mountain though, The Sunburst had just opened, which gave us access to untouched terrain on the main face. When it snows this hard, you prioritize riding the bubble. The snow is pretty wet, so riding the regular lifts does lead to wet thighs and shoulders unless you are in the bubble and protected from the elements. 🫧

The snow was deep, wind-blown, and a little dryer on the summit. The snow is heavy, so you'll want to glide on top of the snow with your tips up. Wider skis will be helpful today! My recommendation is anything over 100mm underfoot.⛷️ My trail of the day was Searle's Way. Searle's has two nice pitches and great natural bumps that skied perfectly today. When the trail ends, you get dumped out onto Wardance, which is always a treat, especially when most people forget about it due to frequent racing. They did re-groom some selected trails to make it easier to enjoy the fresh snow today.

Pro Tip: South Face is going to be the place to be tomorrow because the lift is closed today!

Today's Quick Facts:

🎿 Trail Count: 122/122

🚡 Lift Count: 6/20

🌨️ Snowfall: 19" & counting

This system will be wrapping up tomorrow with snow continuing through the night. We can expect a few more inches to fall, so the skiing tomorrow will be ideal if you like snowy groomers and deep glades. The base depth has received quite the cushion so far this month, which means we should be skiing into mid-April.
