What a way to end the week! ☀️ Happy Friday, readers. This is Abby with your afternoon update on this glorious bluebird ski day. As I write this, I'm currently sitting outside and working on my goggle tan. It's 50 degrees here in Ludlow, which isn't great for the mountain, but it's the first sunny day we've had in a while and I needed this. 😎
Today, Riley Karl takes over the snow report for us and talks about her uphill climb to the summit early this morning with the Unofficial squad. Riley is a ski instructor at Okemo and a local photographer! Give her a follow at @rileykarlphotography on Instagram. 📸 She posts much better skiing content than we do.
Hey, it’s Riley Karl here! 👋 I had the privilege & the pleasure of hiking Okemo this morning up with Noah, Hannah, & Ted from the Top. ⛷️
It was chilly this morning with a low of 27 degrees @ 6am. As the sun rose, it turned out to be a clear bluebird morning, not a cloud in the sky! 💙
Today's Quick Facts:
🏔️ Trail Count: 87/122
🚡 Lift Count: 12/20
🎿 Ski of the Day: Nordica Santa Ana
🧥 Gear of the Day: Helly Hansen Shell!!!
With yesterday's thaw, followed by this morning's freeze, l was worried about how firm the snowpack would be. 🥶 Coming down we noticed it was a little chattery in a few spots, but it was mostly super carvable. As the day warms up the snow’s density will likely decrease and we'll be lookin' at some awesome skiing today! - Riley
Pro Tip: Skiing with your shirt off? DON'T FORGET SUNSCREEN!
Riley was right, the snow sure did soften up, maybe a little too soft in some areas for my liking! 🍦 I skied a few laps with Mariel Meringolo, the headmaster at Okemo Mountain School, and the snow sure did turn to mashed potatoes promptly at 9:30 am. 🥔 Stay tuned for tomorrow's snow report discovery diving into OMS, and specifically why Wardance is always closed. 👀
By 11 am, high-traffic areas were so bumped up that it was hard to maneuver. When you see a SLOW sign in the base areas or busy spots, it's there for a reason! ⚠️
After not skiing for 2 whole weeks (I know, I'm so lame) I was really pleased and proud of how hard Okemo's teams are obviously working to manage snowpack. 💪 Every trail I hit today had great coverage, and if there were dirt patches, they were clearly marked. This warm spell has been tough on the mountain, local businesses, and really most of Vermont.
I'll leave you with this... remember to support local by dining and shopping at our Ludlow businesses and show your support for the mountain by thanking the hardworking employees. 🙌❤️
