Apparently, Mother Nature got the memo that it's Thirsty Thursday because it's a wet day up here with some drizzling, bits of spitting rain, and a few showers are on tap for this afternoon. 🌧️ However, that doesn't stop Noah from choosing to turn an otherwise drab day into an adventure. Not only did he ski, but he pulled out his tele-ski set-up to make his day just a bit more interesting. Here's what he has to say about the conditions at Okemo if you didn't hit the slopes today, or if you're just as interested as me to see if he made it down the mountain. 🤔
It's a pretty dreary day today. 🙈 A little rain, cloudy, and temperatures in the 40s. On days like these, you might wonder if it's worth it to go skiing... because I thought the same thing. As someone who grew up skiing at Okemo, I know every inch of the mountain and it can get boring skiing the same runs over and over. That's when I know it's time to make my own fun.
Sometimes that means skinning up the Healdville trail, skiing the terrain park for a day, or in this case, slapping on my BCX (Back Country Cross Country) setup. I purchased a pair of Scarpa T4s this winter and mounted a Voile 3-Pin Cable Binding on an old pair of Atomic Backland 85s I had laying around (as one does). Basically, it's a wimpy Telemark setup. I have honed my cross-country skills over the years, and I've even skied down Mountain Road with my cross-country setup (not recommended), but this was my first crack at riding the lifts. 🚡
In short, I had an absolute blast skiing on this tele-ish set-up! It was so much fun to get out of my comfort zone and slide through the soft spring snow. I am 99% sure my technique needs work but it was the most fun that I've had in a while. 🤗 It was that kind of fun that I can only assume is how children feel when they finally master the slopes with excitement all over their face.
I took it easy for the first run, Sweet Solitude to Coleman Brook, where the snow was soft but not bumped up yet. On my way back to the bubble, I dipped into Switchback and ventured into the side woods trail. I wasn’t quite ready for the woods, so I quickly made my way back to Mountain Road. On my second lap, I hit up Tomahawk, which was ungroomed (maybe a mistake on my part), but the lower section was gold, soft snow, very edge-able, and the perfect pitch for me to get some confidence. 🏅
Pro Tip: When the conditions aren't ideal, it's up to you to make your own fun.
Today's Quick Facts:
🎿 Trail Count: 122/122
🚡 Lift Count: 11/20
☁️ Weather: High-40s & Light Rain Spurts
The conditions are soft today, with light rain, with a little fog at the summit, not enough to affect visibility that much, though. Coverage is still top-notch so make sure you get into the woods and bumps while they last! 🌲
