Good afternoon, readers! It's Jessie here with your Thursday snow report. It seems like Mother Nature has turned the clocks back to winter today after some spring weather earlier this week! There was even an inch or two of fresh snow waiting for me on the slopes this morning. ❄️ You never know what you’re going to get with March in Vermont – I was driving with my windows open yesterday, but pivoted back to my winter layers to ski today. Hey, I’m not complaining – let’s keep the snow cold as long as possible!
Today was a beautiful day with blue skies and abundant sunshine. ☀️ My first run, Vortex to Quantum Leap, was hard, fast, and a bit crumbly – about what you’d expect after a swing from the 50’s yesterday to teens last night. After some runs at Jackson Gore I headed across the mountain and skied right on to the Sunburst Six without even having to use the singles line – a rare treat! The mountain was pretty empty today and I didn’t wait in line at all – midweek skiing at its finest. ✌️
Lower temps today meant the snow stayed pretty cold in most places, only getting slushy in high traffic areas leading into the big lifts like Lower Mountain Road and Expresso. There was a ton of variability across the mountain ranging from firm spots (thanks to the recent thaw-refreeze cycle) to soft snow in lower elevations and sunny areas. 😜 As always, the Okemo groomers did a great job with the variable conditions this week is throwing at us!
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to check out Switchback if you’re traversing the mountain and heading to the Sunburst lift! It’s a fun little run to break up the journey down Mountain Road – I skied it three times today.
Whispering Pines was my favorite trail today with several inches of untracked powder to play in – so I couldn’t resist hitting it twice! 🎬 The snow underneath was firm but very edge-able, and coverage in the woods was great for late March. I’m also going to give an honorable mention to Countdown, which was a pleasant surprise today. I usually think of this trail as a means to an end since it gets me over to South Face – but the snow on Countdown today was some of the best I found among the groomed trails – soft and buttery without being sticky. 🥞 Rum Run was the only trail where I found substantial ice today – but it clearly wasn't bad enough to deter me since I skied it twice to get to Whispering Pines!
Today's Quick Facts:
🎿 Trail Count: 120/122
🚡 Lift Count: 11/20
☀️ Weather: Bluebird & High-20s
“Conditions were different on every trail today! It’s spring skiing on some runs and winter conditions on others." - Tim, my chairlift buddy
